Polarized Sunglasses Lenses Explained

How Do Polarized Lenses Work?
Light reflected from surfaces such as a flat road or smooth water generally is horizontally polarized. This means that, instead of light being scattered in all directions in more usual ways, reflected light generally travels in a more horizontally oriented direction. This creates an annoying and sometimes dangerous intensity of light that we experience as glare.

Polarized sunglasses cut glare and haze so your eyes are more comfortable and you can see better.
Polarized lenses contain a special filter that blocks this type of intense reflected light, reducing glare.
Though polarized sunglasses improve comfort and visibility, you will encounter some instances when these lenses may not be advisable. One example is downhill skiing, where you don't want to block light reflecting off icy patches because this alerts skiers to hazards they are approaching.
In addition, polarized lenses may reduce the visibility of images produced by liquid crystal displays (LCDs) found on the dashboards of some cars or in other places such as the digital screens on automatic teller (bank) machines.
With polarized lenses, you also may be unable to see your cell phone or GPS device. Boaters and pilots also have reported similar problems when viewing LCD displays on instrument panels, which can be a crucial issue when it comes to making split-second decisions based strictly on information displayed on a panel.
However, for most other sports and activities, polarized sunglasses offer great advantages. And today, many polarized lenses are available in combination with other features that can enhance outdoor experiences.

SolarX Eyewear runs Cleveland Marathon!

SolarX Eyewear was represented by John Norris, Mike Mahoney, Mike Thompson, Mike Nash, Shawn Donahue, and Lisa Saddler in the Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10k races this past Sunday.  Keith Maysey also would have run, but did not get the green light from his doctor.  Keith’s torn ACL and meniscus injury that he suffered earlier in the year had not healed enough and thus prevented him from competing in the race.  While disappointed that he could not participate directly, Keith still attended the race to support his fellow team members from SolarX.  We were proud to be well represented at such a fantastic event both directly by our team and indirectly by the number competitors and spectators we saw wearing our sunglasses.

Mike Thompson tested one of our sport wrap styles, NK06P, and gave it two thumbs up.  Mike was not used to wearing sunglasses while running or training.  I gave him the polarized sunglasses and urged him to try them for a mile or two.  “If you don’t like them, then just throw them out at one of the water stations,” I said.  He agreed.  Being unable to communicate with Mike during the race, I often wondered how the sunglasses were working out for him.  Then, about 5 hours and 53 minutes later, I saw Mike coming down the home stretch still wearing his shades.  After the race, Mike commented how thankful he was to have those sunglasses.  The polarized lenses were also a big help.  The sun could not have been brighter on that beautiful day in May so Mike was very thankful to have the sunglasses shielding his eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays.  Mike has made those polarized sunglasses a part of his regular running gear for the next time he trains or has a big race.

If you've never been to a marathon before we highly recommend it.  Even without participating, it's still a lot of fun to be there on the sidelines to cheer on someone you know. You'll also find yourself cheering on that runner you don't know but you can see that they just need a little boost to finish the race.  We even got to see a man propose to his fiance' just after crossing the finish line.  That was awesome.  After crossing the finish line together he immediately got down on one knee and proposed.  That was fantastic.  Like I said, it was a lot of fun and we can't wait to be a part of it again next year.  Just don’t forget your sunglasses – if next year is anything like this year, you’re going to need them!

 

Sunglasses Marketing 101: Rotate Your Products Regularly

Did you know that every major inline retailer completes a visual merchandising redesign every 6 weeks? This means that they reposition their product, displays, and signage on a regular basis. But what can you as a small independent cart/kiosk operator accomplish with such limited space? There’s the rub… such a small space. You’re right. There’s not a lot you can do.

But what you CAN do CAN have a big impact on your sales. What you need to do on a regular basis is rotate product. Sometimes this just means moving one style of aviators from the right end of the shelf to the left side. It could mean moving the rhinestone sunglasses from the middle shelf to the top or bottom. Add a sign to the middle shelf area highlighting the new product that was just placed there. While it’s true that these changes are small, it’s also true that they’re critical to keep your store looking fresh and attractive. Whether you realize it or not, you do get repeat traffic.

Sunglasses Marketing 101: Group Similar Products Together

Make sure that all of your sunglasses are correctly grouped together at your store. Think of your cart/kiosk as a miniature department store. Every category of sunglasses should have its own department. All the men’s classic aviators should be located together. All of the classic wayfarer styles should be grouped together. All of the women’s rhinestone sunglasses should be in the same section of your sunglasses cart or kiosk.

I was just at a sunglasses retail cart last week where the owner had all of his styles mixed up all around the cart. He said that he likes it that way believing that it “helps his customers walk around the entire cart and shop the entire store.” Sorry, but that’s the wrong way to think about this. The carts and kiosks are so small that customers are going to walk all the way around anyways. And the customers who only want to shop the women’s fashion sunglasses will appreciate that you have them all grouped together. It’s easier for the customer to shop and feel confident that they didn’t miss the perfect pair of sunglasses. Once they’ve picked something, of course we recommend that you suggest a children’s pair or something else for the add-on sale.
